vinyl -- selection OCTOBER 2007

Artist: ANGELS OF LIGHT
Title: We Are Him
Label: Young God
Format: LP
Price: 23,5€
Catalog #: YG35LP

We Are Him is the fifth album from Angels of Light, the main vehicle for Michael Gira's music since he disbanded Swans in 1997. Gira is also known lately as the label master and in-house producer for Young God Records, responsible for the likes of Devendra Banhart, Akron/Family, and Lisa Germano, among many others, further widening the scope and influence of his 25 years of music-making. We Are Him is a potent new chapter in a fiercely individual and remarkable musical journey. Backing/contributing musicians include Akron/Family, Bill Rieflin (Ministry, Swans, Robert Fripp, and currently drummer for both Robyn Hitchcock and REM), Julia Kent (Antony and the Johnsons) Christoph Hahn (longtime Angel and former Swan) and many, many more...
Without any doubt, one of the best album of 2007 !

Artist: KTL
Title: KTL3
Label: OR (UK)
Format: LP
Price: 18,5€
Catalog #: OR RATHER16

LP-only release. This is the third full-length release by KTL, the formidable collaboration between Stephen O'Malley (SunnO))), Khanate, etc.) and Peter Rehberg (Pita, etc.). Another soul-destroying follow-up to the highly-acclaimed 2, with more accompaniments created for the theatre piece, Kindertotenlieder by Gisele Vienne and Dennis Cooper, which premiered in Brest, France, March 2007. Perhaps the broadest bulletin from the duo thus far, featuring two contrasting tracks. The layered dementia bliss of "Loud Game" counterbalances the fried dub of "Sunday." Stephen O'Malley (strings, fx, amps, tube osc.); Peter Rehberg (digital osc, apps, drives). Produced by Stephen O'Malley & Peter Rehberg on location at Vienne Wintergarden, Grenoble & Manoir Kéroual, Guilers, July 2006 and February 2007. One-sided heavyweight vinyl and etching by Savage Pencil (SAVX), packaged in a tip-on style outer sleeve, heavyweight inner sleeve and sticker.

Artist: KTL
Title: 2
Label: THRILL JOCKEY
Format: 2LP
Price: 30€
Catalog #: THR 188LP

Deluxe gatefold double vinyl version of the 2nd KTL album (CD released earlier on Editions Mego). "KTL is Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O))), Khanate) and Peter Rehberg (Pita) -- a threatening collaboration taking in parallel worlds of extreme computer music and black metal. 2 is the devastatingly beautiful four part follow up to the acclaimed self-titled debut and was recorded in a former abattoir in Angers, as well as a 16th century manor in the extreme west of France. Taking the blueprint that was laid out on the first record even further, with the ecstatic build up of 'Theme,' the near psychedelic 'Abattoir,' and closing with the twisted romanticism of 'Snow 2.' An upgrade both artistically and emotionally. As with the first album, elements appeared in the finished version of the theatre piece 'Kindertotenlieder' by Gisele Vienne and Dennis Cooper, which was premiered in Brest, France, in March 2007."

Title: Brazil 70 -- After Tropicalia
Label: SOUL JAZZ RECORDS (UK)
Format: 2LP
Price: 21,5€
Catalog #: SJR 164CD

Subtitled: New Directions in Brazilian Music in the 1970s. "Soul Jazz Records follow up to their incredibly successful Tropicalia: A Revolution in Sound mixes Brazilian funk, rock, samba and soul in equal measures. Brazil 70 follows Brazilian music in the 1970s in the aftermath of Tropicalia and as the country's dictatorship entered its most oppressive phase. Musicians and artists from the Tropicalia period of the late-60s such as Gilberto Gil, Rita Lee (Os Mutantes lead-singer) and Gal Costa entered a new phase mixing rock, funk, samba and soul alongside a wealth of like-minded new artists such as Novos Baianos, Raul Seixas, Nelson Angelo and Joyce and more. With the constant threat of imprisonment, artists nevertheless managed to produce radical music that, like Tropicalia before it, managed to deal with questions of identity, sexuality and society in a revolutionary manner. Brazil 70 chronicles this period in Soul Jazz Records customary style with extensive sleeve-notes, exclusive photography and killer tunes! Vinyl comes on super-loud DJ pressing."

2nd release from LE BONHEUR MEDIAS !

First release of a serie to be continued as and when the meetings and musical affinities. split-lp "half asleep-srx" is conceived as a double door on the universe of the female songwriting. side a : young belgian valérie leclercq (23) and his litlle sister oriane (20) performing as under the name of half-asleep. this time, they've decided to explore new melancholic and throbbing ways, oscillating between the reinterpretation (cold water, hot water is a second reading of half-sailor, song available on 'just before we learned to swim') and the improvisation around an existing melody structure (hell, bell; nowhere, somewhere). side b, sandra reignoux aka srx (france) exploits the possibilities of home recordings with disarming naivety and softness (you), whistling (silly whistle) and whispering, without neglecting to make swell the distortion and to leave free course to its anticonformist personality (regular). In order to join together the two girls in a common design, gwenola carrère, young belgian illustrator designed a plentiful and childish cover.

Artist: MURCOF
Title: Cosmos
Label: LEAF
Format: 2xLP
Price: 23,5€
Catalog #:

It's safe to say that Mexican ex-pat Fernando Corona started a whole movement of classically-influenced electronic music when he dropped his incredible debut album 'Martes' back in 2002. With clipped and perfectly manipulated glitchy beats to rival anything emerging from the Mille Plateaux or Raster Noton stables and the kind of strings you'd expect to hear on a Kieslowski movie, Corona introduced many electronic music fans to the sounds of orchestral bliss and a subgenre was born. Before long we heard the textural explorations of Marsen Jules, the Badalamenti-inspired hum of Deaf Center and the post-classical explorations of Ryan Teague, and although many of them didn't sound identical to Corona's distinctive work, his influence was clear. Now in 2007 and on his third album Fernando Corona is at something of an interesting juncture in his career, looking to move on into new pastures while holding on to that signature sound. 'Cosmos' is a collection of six long-form pieces, music which for the most part dispenses with the beats altogether. His ability to layer strings into epic soundscapes rich with gravitas and levity is breathtaking, some have even mentioned Sunn O))) as an influence and certainly that can be heard on 'Cosmos' and 'Cosmos II', two highlights which build slowly over their ten minute duration into almost cacophonous noise. Another more suitable comparison however might be Machinefabriek who has also perfected this sound (as heard on 'Cello Recycling/Cello Drowning'), but where Rutger Zuydervelt lavishes his compositions with white noise and machine hum, Corona disguises his strings with digital clatter and electronic debris. Those distinctive beats we all became accustomed to on 'Martes' and 'Remembranza' do eventually make an appearance too, but their impact is Muted, surrounded by the grandiose darkness of the string arrangements. Eventually the album comes to a close with its longest piece, the glorious 'Oort' which is possibly the best thing here. Draped in orchestral flourishes and deftly played instruments (violin, horn, piano, xylophone) much of the track is in near silence, but grows and pulses assuredly like an ECM record heard through walls of aluminium, or Supersilent submerged beneath the sea. Yet another triumph from Fernando Corona then, and another highly recommended purchase. (Boomkat)

Artist: EFTERKLANG
Title: Parade
Label: LEAF
Format: 2xLP
Price: 22,5€
Catalog #:

Over recent years the Scandinavian nations have acquired quite a reputation for their expansive, orchestral pop music, with Efterklang being one of the most reliable ports of call for icy, string-based lyricism. Parades finds the band distancing themselves from the throngs of post-rock groups that emerged in the wake of Sigur Ros' success, instead focussing on a folksy, more up close and personal take on the genre. The crisply realised electronic sound design and church choir dynamics of 'Polygyne' typifies what Efterklang do best, occupying a grand scale yet avoiding the impersonal, succeeding in compressing an enormous amount of sonic detail into a comparatively intimate setting. The fact that the group seem to all muck in together (particularly when it comes to vocals) only adds to the charm. 'Mirador' is better yet, a piece that finds Efterklang getting quirky with some knockabout, domestic electronics, taking on Múm at their own game, and frankly, coming off very favourably. The mood does dip on occasion, with pieces like 'Frida Found A Friend' capturing the band in a mournful mood, pairing twinkling music box melodies with requiem-like brass and choral sequences. Parades follows up on the impressive form the group sustained throughout Under Giant Trees, proving that they're still in the upper tier of the Scando-rock elite.

Format: 2xLP Limited to 400 copies
Price: 30€
Catalog #:

17 groupes français issus de la genèse des musiques industrielles, expérimentales, free jazz, musiques de traverse en général et également la suite logique de formations plus récentes forment COILECTIF:

ART&TECHNIQUE [voix de JOHN BALANCE], BELA GOOSY, DEFICIT DES ANNEES ANTERIEURES, DE MANGE MACHINE, DESACCORD MAJEUR, ETANT DONNES, GAS ANOREX, GITANJALI & THE MASTERS OF MYSTIC ENTERTAINMENT, ILITCH [vs COIL's samples], JAC BERROCAL & JACK BELSEN, LAURENT PERNICE & JACQUES BARBERI, LES NOUVELLES LECTURES COSMOPOLITES, OTHILA, PACIFIC 231, PALO ALTO, SERVOVALVE, VIVENZA.
