***** album of the week

TUK     Proud Princess of a Brand New City       (K-raa-K)3  17 E

Without any kind of patriotic feelings, Le Bonheur is conqueered by this magical album. Tuk has done an amazing work on this sublte piece of music and defined a gently articulated structure of sound processing. While collecting guitar sounds, Guillaume Graux aka TUK, reworks the emotion provided by the harmonic treatments with some kind of minimal "rock" spirit. It's just the album i needed for the beginning of December.

VA       This Place is Dreaming        (K-raa-K)3       17 E

This CD is produced in association with This Place is Dreaming ’Äì Rethinking and Transfiguring the Sites and Sounds of Brussels, a project for interdisciplinary creations curated by Ive Stevenheydens and presented at a variety of locations between October 15th and 23th, during the argosfestival 2004. The project brought installations, performances, concerts, lectures and interactive 'actions' by Belgian and worldwide (sound) artists, all focused on the city of Brussels. Eighteen of these are included on this CD.

By the way... do you know this little newspaper ?

Food    last supper   Rune Grammofon    19 E

The fourth album from this quartet and quite possibly their very best. Brilliantly performed and recorded, it´s highlighting the delicate balance between Ballamy and Henriksen´s melodic and lyrical playing and the electronic soundscapes they fully started to explore on “Veggie”. Which speaks volumes when we know that “Veggie” was nominated for a Norwegian grammy and received some outstanding reviews, ”this is remarkable, visionary music (Jazz UK), “a very important work” (Milkfactory, UK). And lets not forget Mats Eilertsen and Thomas Strønen, one of many excellent rhythm sections currently working in Norwegian jazz.
Scorch trio   luggumt    Rune Grammofon    19 E

Follow-up to the highly acclaimed debut from 2002, this follows in the same supreme fashion, but differs in that it is a more varied recording. Bookended by two lenghty tour de force workouts, we get some lovely free playing demonstrating the great interplay these musicians are capable of, beautiful and mystical soundscapes and some strange Korean court music vibes. All in all another smashing release from guitarist Raoul Björkenheim and the great Norwegian rhythm section of bass player Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love.

Supercilious    next time we go sublime    monopsone 18 E

With this new album, its tenth reference, monopsone confirms the union with elaborate electronic music, a fine touch of melody and a search for harmony between hard sounds and a sweet melancholy style.

Indeed, Alexandre Vaudin (aka Supercilious) has used all the opportunities of home studio's work to elaborate "Next Time We Go Sublime". He has structured melodic tracks or has created oniric texture. So, the French composer who has stopped playing in bands to make pieces with computers using powerful break beats, low bass and hypnotic female voice from Yucky Yummy. At the beginning of the album, we are being captured by the dark side of the sound, then the atmosphere becomes more and more melancholic. It reminds us of bands like Mùm, Bowery Electric or Morr Music and City Centre Office's releases. Thus, Supercilious is forging his own identity, finding his way to give us a fantastic album like a sensitive architect.

At the moment, Alexandre with few musicians is preparing his first concerts while various artists are working on "Next Time We Go Sublime" remixes.

Petersonic      Touch#6   Lowlands      17,5 E

A triumphant ‘Yihaaaa’ echoed out of the Petersonic studio earlier this year. Touch#6, the first album, was finally finished.

The album was made using sounds created exclusively by his Petersonicness himself on ‘real’ instruments. But it’s the Rhodes Mark II that takes center stage on almost every song. By recording minute snippets of music, Petersonic creates extra depth in the songs. The beats on the other hand, are produced by cutting extremely long loops into smaller, more compact breaks. Sounds complicated right? You’ll get the picture when you listen to the album.
Petersonic has a unique way of being musical even when tracks are heavily programmed.

Subtle    A new white    Lex Records     18 E

After four stunning seasonally themed EPs - arguably the best of the Anticon collective's output to date - Jel and DoseOne's band Subtle have finally delivered a full-length album.

Though not the live-band version of Themselves that the record could have been, Subtle's current sound has no doubt retained elements of the most recent Themselves live shows, where Subtle's own Dax Pierson played keyboards with Dose and Jel to add a more melodic, 80s layer to their otherwise quite mechanical stylings. However, A New White is an altogether more organic beast.
