MEOW 001 [A CAT SLEEVE EXHIBITION]: A MANIFESTO
- MEOW 001 (sounds like: ‘miauw 001’) is the catalogue
number of the first release on the American electronica record
label Tigerbeat6, run by pioneer (and cat obsessed person) KID
606.
- To be part of a MEOW 001-exhibition, there are some strict
rules:
a) A cat needs to be depicted on the front (!) of a record/CD.
b) The image of the cat can be a photograph, animated, painted
or drawn.
c) Tigers and lions (although part of the feline-family) are
not allowed in the exhibition.
d) An artist his/her name like for example Cat Power, Pussy
Galore or Felix Da House Cat is not enough to be part of a MEOW-exhibition.
Rules a) and b) do have to apply.
e) The music itself is not important. It’s about the sleeve
(exception: see ‘the ultimate cat album’)
f) The only exceptions that are allowed in the MEOW-manifesto
are:
· Logos of independent record labels that refer to cats
(Fat Cat, Asthmatic Kitty, Pussyfoot,…)
· Small details in inlays, on the cd, in a booklet,
on the back of the sleeve that show the love for cats from
the artist.
· Logos and details shall only be a small minority
of the exhibition.
- A MEOW-exhibition should be presented in categories to
prove the seriousness of a MEOW-exhibition. These categories
include a.o.: ‘Lucky Cat’-sleeves, jazz albums
with ‘jazz cats’,…
a) All rules do apply from the MEOW-manifesto, except rule
number 2. e).
The music itself in this category IS important.
b) The songs on the album should be either:
· About cats
· Told/sung from the viewpoint of a cat
· Cat sounds (meowing, hissing, purring, growling…)
should be used
- In 2000 Herbert wrote a manifesto - the ‘Personal
Contract for the Composition Of Music (PCCOM) - rules which
have defined his compositional methods ever since. Like
Herbert’s manifesto, the MEOW-MANIFESTO may add rules
in future times.
- 2. Since a cat has only nine lives, MEOW 001 implodes
at MEOW 009.
