Old Cartoons' wasn't composed in the usual route most band's take when writing their debut album. Recorded between 1996 and 2000 in both Sweden and the UK, duo Martin Lilja and Marilyn Petridean instead opted for a range of recording techniques that lacked any definite plan or order, governed only by when and where the pair could rehearse. This hedonistic, free-for-all method leaves a taste of immediate, raw and personal sketches", that range from a mere 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Although short of length, the tracks are far from lacking in ideas, talent or originality. Simple, fun riffs are performed on an array instruments including melodica, guitars (both electric and acoustic), bass and child's keyboard, which are then treated to Marilyn's untrained vocals and Martin's post-punk snarl. The aim not to make brilliant, squeeky clean commercial music, but to create a batch of genuine, heartfelt tracks that reflect the mood of the pair at that current time. Old Cartoons' in a sense acts more like diary of ideas, thoughts and playful song-writing that can draw comparisons to everyone from Royal Trux, Moldy Peaches and Velvet Underground. |
